MENSWEAR

INITIATION

Updated: Dec 5, 2018

JANNY TAN

CONCEPT: Lovers

"I am interested in exploring people's relationships. Each individual should have their own interpretation of the word 'lovers', so I am trying to define what lovers are to me and how two people interact with one another. Felix Gonzalez-Torres's love letter is my key inspiration. He defines lovers as two synchronized clocks and from there, I started to complete the idea."

DANIEL FABARA RAMOS

CONCEPT: Our thoughts on art

"My first idea was to look at my personal journey with art. Egon Schiele was one of the artists that introduced me into the ‘art world’, so I decided to look at his work and influences in more depth."

MICHAEL STUKAN

CONCEPT: Our thoughts on art

"Design collages are always a starting point for me––transforming research into shapes. Since my project focuses heavily on textile techniques, I experimented with different sampling techniques. Lasercutting––in a technique that resembles skin grafting––and embroidering anthropometry diagrams were two of the textile methods I sampled with. My white project piece is quite feminine, which is a recurring motif in my work. My interest in putting men in queer shapes definitely comes through in my white project piece."

ALISTAIR LYNES

"The biggest hurdle I've faced so far has been persuading my Tutor to let me have large shoulders on my jacket. When I said I wanted to extend them by 10cm he replied '3'. The shoulders are 5cm bigger... For now."

ASHLEY MORRIS

"At the moment I’m inspired by the new surroundings of being in a fast paced city like London but I’m sure the novelty will wear off soon enough."

ROSS

"I am planning on using suede as my main choice of fabric from the 4 we have to choose from. This is due to the nature of the fabric and how it doesn’t drape and holds shape well. This relates with the brief of sustainability as this fabric is made from previous recycled suede."

STANLEY

"I’ve been looking at characters in movies where money and greed plays a big part. I’ve been inspired by movies like Wall Street, New Jack City and Paid in Full."

XIE PENG

CONCEPT: Traditional borderlines

"I am influenced by people's traditional thoughts, which is interesting to discover. The last emperor is a movie which I have embraced and referred back to within my own designs."

HE CAO

"Olafur Eliasson's has inspired my White Show design, and also Dries' menswear collection allows me to see more possibilities with suits.

LEO XUEYANG LIU

CONCEPT: Traditional borderlines

"My inspiration for this White show design stems from traditional Chinese writing stroke and a Chinese photographer named Ren Hang. When it comes to sustainability within my designs, I say, "Yesterday is a history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift."

HITOSHI SHIOTA

CONCEPT: Lovers

"I don’t usually work on a theme such as ‘Love’. And so, I thought this would be a good opportunity to challenge myself in order to make progress. My inspirations for my design are How Wafuku (Japanese clothes) get looser while sex and Shun-ga (Japanese woodblock printings) which depicts Sex as a main resource. Issey Miyake has inspired my design aesthetic in terms of the use of the Kimono shape."

ERICA PRUS

CONCEPT: Our thoughts on art

"My starting point was ‘your thoughts on art’. I decided to explore the other worldly sculptures from the first agricultural civilisation, Ancient Mesopotamia (now modern day Iraq and Syria)."

DYLAN MCDONNELL

'I've found that working with sustainable fabrics has pushed me to be more inventive. My creative process usually begins by collecting imagery relating to the theme, often stills from films. For The White Show, I found inspiration in films like 'Donkeyskin' (1970) and 'Blood on Satan's Claw' (1971.)

KAI MULLINGS

CONCEPT: Borders

"Coming from a fine art background, I find the marriage between art and fashion interesting"
